Each climatic region is characterized by its own peculiarities of growing garden crops, therefore it is impossible to speak with accuracy about the same yield of all selected varieties of cucumbers. To planting brought the maximum number of fruits, it is important to find out in advance which of the varietal variations are suitable for cultivation in the selected place, and in our case, in the suburbs.
The best varieties of cucumbers for the Moscow Region for growing in a greenhouse and open ground
All modern cucumber varieties can be divided into several groups at once: with its pros, cons and growing features. So, in the Moscow Region territory, both early plants and late-ripening crops grow equally well. However, when planting each of them, it is worth considering the method of pollination, because if there are no bees nearby, some plants may not bring the expected yield. Let's consider each of the possible options more carefully.
Did you know? Among modern cucumbers, there are real giants. For example, the Landgurke variety, bred by breeders from East Germany, boasts fruits weighing 5–10 kg each.
Ultra-ripening and early ripening varieties
Ultra early varieties of cucumbers are called those that are able to actively bear fruit already 45–47 days after sowing seeds. Many of them feel great in an open bed and in closed soil, however, in some cases, the place of planting and the method of pollination play a key role in the issue of abundance of fruiting. Consider the most popular options for self-pollinated and bee pollinated varieties for the suburbs.
Parthenocarpic (self-pollinated) varieties
The anatomical features of self-pollinated plants provide for the possibility of forming bisexual flowers on them, which eliminates the need for bees in the area. Such varieties quickly form ovaries, which means that the crop can be obtained in record time.
The following options will be most suitable for the Moscow Region:
- Goosebumps - an early ripe hybrid variety that does not require the presence of insects. A distinctive feature of the fruits of the plant are large, clearly visible tubercles on the surface of the skin. In shape it is a cylindrical and slightly elongated vegetable of a dark green color, which is often used to create salads. Observing all cultivation requirements, from 1 m² you will collect about 7 kg of crispy fruits.
- Kuzya - Another representative of early cucumbers, with greenery up to 8 cm long. All of them are characterized by sweet and watery pulp, due to which they are actively used fresh, especially in combination with cherry tomatoes and green onions. Some housewives use the variety to create preservation, claiming that in salt form it does not lose its taste properties. Kuzya variety can grow in any type of soil, but the owners of greenhouses collect the largest yield. Productivity - 7 kg from 1 m² of territory.
- Gourmet - a variety represented by cylindrical small-tuberous vegetables, with a dark green peel surface. Their inner part is dense and sweet, but the variety has earned the greatest value due to the small size of the chamber with seeds. The latter are excellent for sowing in open ground, with further universal use.
- Orpheus - early cucumbers with a technical ripening period of 45 days. The weather does not affect the yield of the plant and from 1 m² of area often collect up to 8 kg of greens. In length, each of them grows up to 10-12 cm and is characterized by excellent taste, without the slightest sign of bitterness (even in conservation). When grown in a seedling-free way, the seeds of this variety are sown only in a greenhouse shelter, and if you want to grow cucumbers in an open area, then it is better to start sowing seeds for seedlings.
- Alekseich - a variety that can give the first crop 40–42 days after the first germination. The variety is represented by medium-sized plants that produce slightly tuberous fruits, each weighing 60–80 g. In length, one such green leaf reaches about 7-8 cm, the color is light green, with barely noticeable white stripes along the entire length of the vegetable. It can be used for any culinary purposes. Productivity is quite high and in closed soil with 1 m² often get more than 11 kg of crisp cucumbers.
Bee pollinated varieties
Bee pollinated cucumbers take root perfectly in almost any open area, the main thing is that bees can easily find the plant. Without their participation, it will be impossible to achieve a good harvest, because all the flowers on the bush are same-sex.
Among the varieties suitable for cultivation in the suburbs, the following are considered the most popular:Did you know? The longest officially registered cucumber was able to grow a British resident Alf Cobb, who, thanks to proper agricultural technology, introduced the world to a world 91.7 cm long.
- Alligator - A fast-growing, powerful crop with a long fruiting period. Dark green fruits resemble an elongated cylinder, and large elevations are easy to notice on their skin. The length of the cucumbers is up to 45 cm, so when you roll it into jars, you have to cut it into pieces. The sweet flesh of these cucumbers is hidden under a thin and delicate skin, almost invisible when consumed, which means that they are perfect for fresh consumption. About 1 kg is collected from 1 m² when grown in greenhouses and not more than 8 kg when cultivated in open soil.
- Chinese heat resistant - a variety with high disease resistance. The bush itself is powerful, with one stalk and short internodes. Dark green fruits are characterized by a cylindrical shape and a length of 30-40 cm, and the surface of the vegetable is always smooth. They can be grown in low light and high temperature conditions, without damage to the crop. Cucumbers of the variety are equally well suited both for fresh use and for creating blanks, and from 1 m² of plantings usually collect at least 10 kg of green leaves.
- April - Another hybrid variety with early ripening greenhouses. You can try the first fruits already after 40–45 days from the moment of sowing the seeds. Dark green cucumbers of a standard cylindrical shape, of rather large sizes - they can grow up to 22 cm in length. All of them are devoid of any bitterness, therefore they are great for implementing any culinary ideas, however, for conservation they will have to be cut into pieces. Among the main advantages of this variety are good resistance to adverse external influences (especially diseases and pests), as well as good indicators of frost resistance, which only contribute to its landing in open ground. With good care of the plantings from 1 m², you can collect up to 6 kg of greenhouses.
- Cruise - a plant that produces fruits starting from the 45th day after germination. Cylindrical, light green cucumbers have noticeable spikes and grow up to 8–10 cm (with a weight of about 100 g). Cucumber bushes feel great both in closed and open ground, and ripened fruits are suitable for use in a variety of purposes. The variety is characterized by good resistance to any powdery mildew (both false and true), which greatly facilitates the care of it. Productivity - up to 4.5 kg per 1 m².
- Levina - characterized by light green cylindrical fruits 10-12 cm long each. All cucumbers are characterized by a pleasant taste and can be used for any purpose, only without a long heat treatment. Additional advantages of the variety include high resistance to disease, good transportability and the complete absence of a bitter aftertaste in the fruit. The plant grows equally well both in open soil and under film or glass shelters. About 1 kg of fruit usually grows on 1 m².
Mid-season varieties
This group of cucumbers is deservedly considered a kind of "golden mean", because it is much better opposed to the characteristic cucumber ailments and needs fewer fertilizing during the formation of the ovaries.
In the region near Moscow, from cucumbers of medium ripening, you can choose one of the following varieties:Important! When planting in greenhouses, plants should be regularly ventilated, otherwise the accumulated condensate can provoke the development of putrefactive processes on different parts of the bushes.
- Competitor - represented by medium-sized bushes with a large number of side shoots. The first dark green fruits can be harvested as early as 48–55 days after sowing the seeds. Over the entire surface of the cucumbers, tubercles are clearly visible, but without prickly spikes. On average, the length of the fruit varies between 10–15 cm, and from 1 m² of plantations it is possible to collect up to 4 kg. The height of the longest lashes does not exceed 2 m, but for the convenience of harvesting, it is better to arrange the plant with the appropriate support. Ripe Zelentsy can be used for any culinary purposes.
- Son of the regiment - a variety belonging to the group of mini-gherkins with a ripening period of 48-50 days. Fruits are oval, with large but rare tubercles over the entire surface. The thorns present on cucumbers are light in color, and the total fruit length is 6–8 cm. The main distinguishing characteristic of the variety is the inability of the fruit to outgrow or turn yellow, and the excellent resistance to the virus of cucumber mosaic, powdery mildew and scab of pumpkin species can be considered an additional advantage. Zelentsy can be plucked from the bushes at the stage of picks, using in the future for a variety of purposes. From 1 m², the territories receive no more than 5 kg of crop.
- Madame - mid-ripening variety, bearing fruit approximately 50 days after sowing seeds in open soil. The color of the cucumber fruits is dark green, with characteristic light stripes along the entire length. The shape of the cucumbers is cylindrical, and in length they grow up to 10–12 cm, reaching a weight of 65–85 g. The fruit thorns are white in color, relatively soft, scattered on a thin peel in a chaotic manner. From 1 m² of plantations, it is possible to collect 10.5-14.0 kg of greenery, which is explained by the ability of the plant to intensive fruit formation. Harvest can be used for any purpose: to create blanks and to prepare salads.
- Courage - It is characterized by average ripening, that is, the first Zelentsy can be expected no earlier than 52–55 days after germination. The main characteristic features of the fruits include increased crunch, excellent cucumber flavor and a sweetish taste of pulp, which, with an optimal level of humidity, will never be bitter. Light green cucumbers usually grow up to 15 cm in length, reaching a weight of at least 140 g. When grown in greenhouses with 1 m², you can get up to 10 kg of greenery. In open soil, these indicators are slightly more modest - up to 7 kg.
- Business - a bee-pollinated variety that allows you to try the first cucumbers 55 days after germination of seedlings. All dark green cucumbers are characterized by a cylindrical shape and grow up to 10 cm in length. The weight of one green leaf is about 90–105 g. Bushes are relatively tall with lashes up to 1.8 m long, highly branched. Fruits often form on the lateral branches. Among the positive qualities of the plant are its versatility and good resistance to downy mildew. From 1 m² of territory you can collect 7 kg of cucumbers.
Late ripening varieties
The ripening dates of late ripe cucumbers are more than 55 days from the time of emergence of the seedlings. To some, such a feature may seem like a lack of plants, but in fact there is a significant advantage: a long development period helps to strengthen the root system, which ultimately provides long-term nutrition of the shoots and the fruits themselves. As a result, the formed greens retain their color and structure for a long time.
Among the varieties that are ideally suited for the Moscow region, the following can be distinguished:Did you know? Preserve the freshness of cucumbers at 3–4 months a paraffin candle and a three-liter jar will help. Filling the sterilized container with clean and dry green leaves for 3/4 of the entire volume, put a lighted candle on top of them and let it burn for 10 minutes, then close the jar with a lid. After 20-30 seconds, the candle will go out, and the jar of vegetables can be moved to a cool place.
- Ardor - a self-pollinated plant capable of producing crops 55 days after seedling germination. All dark green greenbacks are short, cylindrical in shape and with tubercles on the surface of the skin. In addition, short white hairs that resemble light pubescence are clearly visible on it. Pulp - medium density, with a standard cucumber smell. The mass of the vegetable is 75–85 g, while in the open area with 1 m² it is possible to collect up to 16 kg of fruits.
- Intolerable 40 - Another hybrid variety that yields crops 55-60 days after the emergence of young plants. Compared to many other varietal variations, this variety is characterized by excellent frost resistance, due to which gardeners collect fruits until late autumn. The lashes of the plant reach 100–140 cm, and the fruits can be removed from the bush as soon as they grow to 10–12 cm in length. The peel of ripened cucumbers is bright green, covered with large tubercles and whitish spikes. Along the entire surface are longitudinal light green lines. Under standard growing conditions, up to 5 kg of fruit grows on 1 m².
- Droplet - late variety giving yield in 55-60 days. Compared with other varieties of late ripening, this plant is characterized by shorter shoots, reaching a length of no more than 75–90 cm. Cucumbers themselves are formed on them, 8–11 cm long and weighing 110–120 g each. The peel of the fruit is bright green, with large tubercles and longitudinal lines of light color. For pollination of the variety, the presence of bees is necessary, but in favorable growing conditions from 1 m² it will be possible to collect at least 8 kg of delicious fruits with juicy and dense pulp. You can use cucumbers in any form, since the described variety is universal.
- Solar - a hybrid variety reaching technical maturity at the age of 50–65 days. Recommended for cultivation not only in the suburbs, but also in the Lower Volga region. The plant is bisexual, with a lash length of 1.8–2 m. A large number of branches are formed on each of the shoots, which in some cases are recommended to be removed. The fruit itself is represented by cylindrical greenery, 12–13 cm long. The color of the cucumbers is dark green, with characteristic light green longitudinal lines and shapeless spots. The average weight of one cucumber is 120–140 g, and from 1 m² of plantations it is possible to collect at least 5 kg of greenery. The fruits are equally well suited for any culinary application.

All fruits are egg-shaped, reaching a length of 10 cm. Large, but relatively rare tubercles with black spikes are scattered over the entire surface of the skin. The pulp of the fruit is juicy, with a well-perceptible cucumber aroma. The average weight of a bright green cucumber is approximately 90–110 g, and up to 3 kg of universal fruits can be harvested from 1 m² of plantings.Important! With long-term storage, cucumbers of this variety are able to lose their usual color, so it is recommended to close them in jars immediately after harvesting.
Features of growing cucumbers in the suburbs
No matter how productive the varieties of cucumbers you have chosen for growing in the Moscow region, the abundance of their fruiting largely depends on the correct choice of the site for planting and further agricultural activities. So, self-pollinated varieties can be planted next to peas and cabbage, but it is better to avoid neighborhoods with nightshade.
It is also worth paying attention to the location of the selected site: it must be illuminated by the sun, characterized by a light and nutritious substrate and be protected from sharp gusts of cold winds. Good predecessors for this crop are tomatoes, root vegetables, legumes, cabbage, peppers and onions. At the same time, after cucumbers (albeit other varieties), these plants are best not sown, allowing the soil to rest from it for at least 2-3 years.
When planting in open soil, the optimal dates for this event can be considered early June, having prepared the site since the fall for growing cucumbers.
We advise you to read about the problems when growing cucumbers in the open ground:
When performing autumn work in the garden, dig a strip 70 cm wide and no more than 20 cm deep. In the center of this strip, you can make an additional trench 30 cm deep. Straw, leaves, sawdust, peat and grass are laid in it with a layer of at least 15 cm. In spring, everything these components can be mixed with soil or completely removed from the beds, leveling the substrate and sowing cucumber seeds into it to a depth of 3 cm. All further care steps are carried out by standard methods.
This is not to say that the cultivation of cucumbers in the Moscow Region is very different from the cultivation of crops in other cities of the middle or even southern strip, however, to get an abundant harvest, it is still worth considering the described nuances, which, first of all, relate to the choice of a particular plant variety and place for planting it .
