During the growing season of corn in Ukraine, this crop is harmed by a corn moth. In addition to direct damage, it leads to the spread of corn diseases.
The most noticeable harmfulness is felt in the forest-steppe and northern zone of the Steppe and in the western Forest-steppe. In the zone of sufficient moisture, the pest can develop in 2-3 generations.
The flight of butterflies, the laying of eggs, as a rule, coincides in time with the beginning of the throwing out of the corn panicle. Caterpillars are harmed by eating holes on leaves, male flowers in panicles, cuttings, tops of stems and panicles.
Corn moth
Caterpillars usually do more harm to plants of late crops. In addition to direct harm, the corn moth, damaging corn plants, creates conditions for the penetration of pathogens of bladder smut, fusarium, and head of mildew.
This year, the corn moth can significantly harm everywhere, especially with enough moisture.
For information, the caterpillars of this insect damage corn, and also harm millet, hemp and hops. In addition, they can damage soy, sorghum, pepper, and cotton.
This species is one of the most dangerous pests in the regions of hop and corn cultivation. Caterpillars eat away the stem inside, which weakens the plants. The stalks damaged by the corn moth often break off, making harvesting difficult. With great damage, crop losses reach 10% of the grain and green mass of corn.
