NFU President Minnett Butters said Britain could run short of potatoes due to the impossibility of dredging rivers, causing some flooding.
Up to 50% of this year’s crop rot on the ground because farmers couldn’t harvest, Butters said, adding that “she never saw such a modest winter sowing in her working life.”
The UK is completely self-sufficient with table potatoes, so a shortage can lead to higher costs and a shortage of goods in supermarkets. There will probably also be a shortage of seed potatoes for spring sowing, which means that problems may continue next year.
Butters added that this could even affect Brussels sprouts and corn, but the farmers "will do everything possible so that there is no shortage of food for Christmas."
However, the President noted that the Environmental Protection Agency should work with farmers to ensure that the rivers were dredged.
Direct speech: “We must see radical changes in the way we direct them. The current leadership is shameful; we need to improve the system for our own food, for farmers and for people in general. ”
Direct speech: “We need the Environmental Protection Agency to work with us and ensure uninterrupted operation of the water. In many parts of the UK we have too much water, and in other areas too little. ”
