The Kherson region is able to provide oysters not only to all of Ukraine, but also to the countries of Europe, in which the scientists of the Kherson State Agrarian University express confidence. With their students, they conducted a practical scientific study of the Tiligul estuary, where the only oyster farm in the country, “Oysters of Scythia,” is located.
Researchers took water samples, determined their contents on zooplankton and phytoplankton to determine the level of food base for oysters.
Kherson region has a rich history of growing oysters. At the beginning of the 20th century, Baron Falz-Fein, who lived in Skadovsk, owned seven oyster farms and delivered his products to Paris, Vienna, Warsaw and St. Petersburg.
Although today the cultivation of oysters in Ukraine is not up to standard, the country has all the natural possibilities for this, the candidate of agricultural sciences, associate professor of the Department of Aquatic Biological Resources and Aquaculture of KSAU Viktor Shevchenko is sure.
Countries located near the Black Sea, such as Georgia, Bulgaria and Turkey, own media and oyster production, Ukraine alone lags behind. The reason for this is the lack of proper legislative regulation of this sphere, says Pavel Kutishchev, acting Head of the Department "Aquatic Bioresources and Aquaculture" KSAU.
According to scientists, the climatic conditions of the Kherson region are very favorable for growing oysters of the highest quality. The region has everything necessary for this - seawater and a good fodder base.
Oyster farms in the Kherson region can be created in the Yagorlytsky and Dzharylgachsky bays.
