Sausages seasoned with hot red pepper and garlic have been cooked in the Romanian village of Pleska for several centuries in a row. The combination of ingredients and the production process gives Pleski sausages a unique taste, known in Romania since the 13th century.
The European Commission has approved the registration of the Romanian product “Plesco Sausage” in the Register of Products with Protected Geographical Indications (PGI).
Pleska is a village in the Romanian district of Buzau, where smoked sausages are made from a mixture of lamb and beef, and sometimes goat meat. They are seasoned with hot red pepper and garlic. These sausages have been produced in the village since the 13th century. According to MADR, the share of lamb in them is at least 55%, and beef - not more than 45%.
Until now, most manufacturers did not have an official production license, so sausages, as a rule, could be purchased in small quantities directly from the manufacturer.
However, some licensed sausage producers Pleski have formed an association to promote and distribute them in the European market. This sign certainly represents the added value of a traditional Romanian product.
Romania already has five trademarks. In addition to the Plesko sausage, the guarded designation of geographical origin is Topoloveni plum jam, Sibiu salami salami, smoked carp from the Tara River, smoked Danube mackerel, and feta Ibanesti cheese, which has a protected designation of origin.
