About 100 agricultural tractors were on Tuesday outside the parliament building in Tallinn in protest from Estonian agricultural producers. Farmers require more support from the state and the European Union.
The protest was organized by the Estonian Chamber of Agriculture and Trade (EPKK). Farmers expect an increase in domestic financing and an increase in EU subsidies for local producers to the level of the EU average.
During the protest, a gift was prepared for each member of parliament of the Riigikogu - a box with a toy model of a tractor with the inscription “Play with me, not with food”.
According to the head of the chamber, Rumet Sormus, toy tractors are an expression of “disappointment of farmers with the constant violation of the promises they are given,” the Estonian television company ERR reports.
Direct speech: “Farmers have already seen too many promises of politicians, which turned out to be empty words. We really would like to believe that issues related to the Estonian countryside and agriculture are not issues of the fifth category for parliament and the ruling coalition, ”said Sormus.
According to EPKK estimates, the latter in 2014-2019. in the EU, at the expense of Estonian farmers, they saved more than 60 million euros by paying them significantly lower than the EU average, while expecting full compliance with the requirements for the production and delivery of public goods.
The farmers' protest in the capital of Estonia took place the day before the last third reading of the draft budget for 2020, scheduled for Wednesday in the Estonian parliament, which should approve the final reduction in the amount of agricultural compensation for next year.
