Plums of the Lolita variety at the Fruit Attraction exhibition in Madrid made a big impression on visitors. Besides its unusual shape and color, the fruits taste good and can be stored until Christmas.
According to Monica Kujundzic, Head of Communications and Marketing at French Fruit Lovers, visitors at first did not realize that it was a plum, then they were even more captivated by its taste.
Lolita variety was created after ten years of testing and the development of Israeli breeder Ben Dora.
The plum variety Lolita is distinguished by a round, heart-shaped form of the fruit, a peel green to a red dot and a red-purple flesh. Lolita plums are juicy and sweet.
Producers who grow this plum in France, Spain and Portugal have teamed up with French Fruit Lovers.
As Monika Kujundzic reported, the new variety resists spring frosts well and also has good yields. In addition, the fruits of this plum last a very long time.
“Our plums harvested in September are sometimes stored until the end of December or even January. Shelf life is associated with a high level of sugar in the plum and its solid structure.
This makes it a product that is very interesting for sale in the market. Plums have a seasonal problem, as in summer consumers switch to melons, peaches and nectarines. With Lolita we hope to avoid this. We offer plums for Christmas when competition with other fruits is much lower, ”said Monika Kujundzic.
The company sold Lolita trees per 100 hectares, which they would plant in three years. They will begin to produce crops in the third year. In France, in 2020, they expect to receive about 100 tons of Lolita plums.
In addition to France, Spain and Portugal, there is an idea to grow this variety in South Africa in order to import it into Europe in March.
